SHETLANDS - Depth of cover surveys at offshore pipeline landfall

- surveys monitoring depth of cover changes ...

Gas pipelines coming ashore from North Sea rigs are sometimes buried under open beaches.

A sufficient depth of ground cover must be maintained to protect these lines from possible damage, but beaches move or erode under the influence of wind and tide.

Regular depth-of-cover C-Scan surveys are carried out on some of the more vulnerable pipelines. The data is downloaded from the C-Scan Detector direct to a computer and automatically compared with previous survey results to determine the rate of change in ground cover over each section, and to highlight places where the cover could become dangerously diminished in the future.
